Jamie Dean Atkins is a fifth-generation farmer in Monroe County. He follows in the footsteps of W.D. and Jeanette Atkins, along with their sons, Alan and Brian Atkins. Together, they grow corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat, and peanuts on 4,000 acres. "I'm doing what I always wanted to do," Jamie Dean said. "I wouldn't know what else I would be doing if I wasn't farming. It's hard work, but I really enjoy it."
Sledge Taylor & Sons
Sledge Taylor is also a fifth-generation farmer. He and his sons, David and Andrew, grow cotton, corn, peanuts, and soybeans. They also raise cattle. It's been a challenging few years with the price of inputs which are higher than ever. "We have seen the prices of fertilizer and herbicides double and triple," Mr. Taylor said. "We have seen some relief with prices coming down some, but not down where they were. There are always going to be tough times. That's farming. You have to be an optimist to farm."
