Politics Ups and Downs (PoliticsPA)
“It’s the first official week of spring and budget hearings are blooming all over the Capital City. But other news was made outside the halls of the Capitol … providing us with many of our Ups and Downs for the week ending March 23.” |
The Independent State Legislature Theory that the Supreme Court is considering in Moore v. Harper is dangerous. It would push our country away from democracy and towards more extreme partisanship. |
Pennsylvania’s fiscal year begins July 1 and ends June 30 the following year. To ensure that funding for all state programs continues, the budget should be completed and signed by the Governor by midnight on June 30.
Pennsylvania Budget Process and Timeline: - October: State agencies submit their budget requests to the Governor’s budget office.
- October - January: The Governor’s budget office and other key staff develop a budget proposal.
-
Beginning of February/March: Governor addresses the PA General Assembly with their budget speech releasing the budget proposal that highlights aspects of their proposed budget along with priorities for the Commonwealth for the next fiscal year.
-
End of February - March: The PA House of Representatives and Senate hold several weeks of appropriations hearings with all state agencies about the details of their agency’s proposed budget.
- April/May: A budget is drafted and introduced as a bill by the PA General Assembly and goes through the normal legislative process.
After the General Assembly passes the budget bill, the Governor has the opportunity to sign the bill, veto the bill, permit the bill to become law without signing it, or line-item veto particular items. |
Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate! Wishing you a meaningful and peaceful fast. |
Thank you for taking the time to stay informed. We'll be back in two weeks with the latest edition. In solidarity, Kadida and #TeamNPP |
