Democrat,
I want to begin this week’s update by wishing our Muslim community a peaceful and holy month of Ramadan, the ninth and most sacred month of the Islamic calendar.
I found this article interesting and helpful [[link removed]] for those people looking to more fully understand Ramadan, honored by almost 1.9 billion Muslim people across the world. It is a month-long holiday of charity, self-reflection, gratitude and community, and I firmly believe that we are stronger, as individuals and as a state and country, when we take the time to learn from our different cultures.

“Today we underscore once again that economic opportunity is abundant and accessible in New Jersey, especially for the small businesses that line our main streets and undergird our local communities,” said Governor Murphy. [[link removed]] “ This legislation will enable us to attract, retain, and inspire small businesses to expand in a state that remains at the national forefront of economic vitality and innovation.”
I am grateful for Governor Murphy, alongside Speaker Coughlin and his Small Business Legislative Package [[link removed]] , for investing in the small businesses that are the backbone of so many of our communities.

Throughout the month of March, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee will celebrate Women’s History Month with a weekly spotlight of trailblazing women leaders throughout the state. This week we are proud to shine a spotlight on NJDSC’s LGBTQ+ Caucus Chair, Lauren Albrecht (she/her/hers).

Lauren is a full-time healthcare finance data analyst and also proudly works as a lobbyist for Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s largest LGBTQ rights organization. She is the Chair of the NJDSC LGBTQ+ Caucus, appointed to this position by Chairman Currie in 2019 and re-appointed by Chairman Jones in 2021. She has also formerly served on the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and the Monmouth County Democrats Executive Board. Lauren is active in local and statewide civics and advocacy as relevant to New Jersey’s LGBTQ Community.
Lauren lives in Wall Township with her family and her dog Shelby, where she also holds the position of Democratic Municipal Chair. In her free time, you can find her running trails with Shelby, enjoying the beach and live music, spending time with her family and friends and particularly her niece Leonora, reading historical fiction and non-fiction, watching true crime and paranormal shows, and knocking on doors and raising funds for LGBTQ candidates all over the state.

On Thursday, President Biden celebrated the 13th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act and the 40.2 million Americans who now have health coverage [[link removed].] because of the ACA. President Biden reiterated his dedication to “protecting, strengthening, and building on” [[link removed]] the ACA even as virtually every Republican budget or fiscal plan over the last decade has included repeal of the ACA and deep cuts to Medicaid. Current House Republicans reportedly have a plan prepared that will impact both of these important benefits. [[link removed]]
If Republicans are successful in repealing the ACA and gutting Medicaid, health care will be more expensive for New Jersey families and health insurance coverage would be at risk for over 1 million people.
What’s clear is this: Republicans are trying to make healthcare more expensive for families across New Jersey and the country so billionaires, major corporations and the very wealthy can get more tax breaks. We cannot let this happen. We must continue doing our part by mobilizing behind leaders who will not let the health and safety of working people and families be at the whims of Wall Street interests.
— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.
P.S. NJDSC’s Latino Caucus is having a virtual general meeting on Tuesday, March 28 that will feature Latino Caucus Chair Arlene Quiñones Perez, NJDSC Executive Director Saily Avelenda, and Morris County Democratic Committee Chair Amalia Duarte. RSVP here to attend! [[link removed]]
