When this photo was taken, I would not have believed that I’d be the first woman and person of color that Delaware would send to Congress.

Don’t get me wrong, public service and activism are values that I grew up with.
My Dad made sure that we had a copy of the Afro American Encyclopedia so that my siblings and I could learn about the Civil Rights movement and the Black Power movement – this education is one of the things that motivated me to find my voice in the demonstrations and protests of the 1970s.
But here’s the thing: at the time, we didn’t have any formalized Black history courses, and oftentimes Black women leaders went unrecognized. Many of them still aren’t.
I’m proud to be the first woman and first woman of color to represent the First State in Congress, but I’m determined not to be the last.
