The Best of Policy Orientation 2020

What to Know: Immigration continues to divide America—but there’s a way forward.

The TPPF Take: We must pass sensible immigration reforms, while remembering how we as a nation benefit from immigration.

“Conservatives believe our immigration system should attract our best and brightest, freedom-loving people,” former Sen. Jim DeMint said last week at Policy Orientation 2020. “The Left believes immigration is an international charity paid for by the American people.”

Properly, Taxes

What to Know: The Wall Street Journal says some residents are leaving Texas because of sky-high property taxes.

The TPPF Take: Texas shouldn’t let local governments erode the Texas Model of low taxes and more opportunity.

“Sky-high property taxes are pushing people out of their homes, out of their businesses, and out the state entirely,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “The next Texas Legislature must continue to make property tax reform and relief a top priority, if we are to remain the economic envy of the nation.”

Supreme Patience

What to Know: The U.S. Supreme Court won’t fast-track the Affordable Care Act case, but may still grant review.

The TPPF Take: Petitioners failed to demonstrate an emergency that would warrant expedited review.

“Not fast-tracking the case ensures that Texas v. Azar—the case we argued on behalf of the individual plaintiffs—may be properly considered, rather than rushed. But, while the case continues, it provides Congress with the best opportunity to show the American people what a workable alternative to government-run health care might look like,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “The key to winning this policy debate is demonstrating that more choices and strengthening the relationships between doctors and patients are what Americans truly want.”
