#LowcountryFirst Pass In Review | March 24, 2023 The Parental Bill of Rights Hello and happy Friday! It has been a busy week in the Lowcountry and in DC! We cannot wait to fill you in on everything we’ve been up to! We kicked off the week with the South Coast Cyber Center Summit in Beaufort on Monday. It was great to speak about chairing the Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Tech, and Government Innovation, and how we are leading efforts to strengthen our nation’s cybersecurity and protect our critical infrastructure. Wednesday it was time to head back to represent YOU in Washington. We started off Wednesday with meetings galore! We met with State Representative Wendell Gilliard of House District 111, SC Representative Robert Williams of House District 62, and Commissioner Brenda Grant of James Island Public Service District Commission on economic empowerment. Our next meeting was with Aircraft Carrier Industrial Case Coalition from the Lowcountry to discuss the importance of the aircraft carrier program and the value of the aircraft carrier industrial base as a vital player in our nation’s defense. Next, we met with SC Lt. Governor Pamela Evette while she was in DC for the National Lieutenant Governors Association meeting. We talked on all things about the great state of South Carolina and look forward to meeting again! We had the chance to also meet with the Executives from Charleston Housing Authority about how we can better meet the needs of those who are seeking public housing in the Lowcountry and across the nation. Lastly, we met with Evelyn Hugo, the President of the South Carolina Hispanic Chamber about policy in regard to business, entrepreneurship, and the expansion opportunity for small, minority, women, and veteran-owned businesses. On Thursday we had a Full Committee Hearing on the U.S. Military Posture and National Security Challenges in the greater Middle East and Africa. To watch the hearing, look here. We also had a Full Committee Oversight Hearing in Veterans Affairs on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Budget Request for Fiscal Years 2024 and 2025. To watch the full hearing, look here. Lunchtime Thursday we met with Planet Labs, a satellite imagery company founded in 2010 by three NASA scientists. We discussed technologies which could aid our national security! Thursday afternoon we chaired the Oversight Subcommittee Hearing on Cyber titled Unpacking the White House National Cybersecurity Strategy. We brought in Kemba Walden, the Acting Cyber Director Office of the National Cyber Director. To watch the full subcommittee hearing, look here. Early Friday we joined the Military Promotion Ceremony for LTC Daniel Byrnside, who is one of our constituents! He and two other SC Soldiers were promoted at the US Capitol Building. We were joined by other SC Representatives - Rep. Joe Wilson and Rep.Ralph Norman. Friday morning we voted YES on HR 5, the Parents Bill of Rights. This bill protects parents' right to be involved in their child’s education. To read more about this bill, look under "Hot Off The Press." Next week we are back in DC for another week representing YOU! In other news, on April 5th we will be holding our Grand Opening event from 5:30pm - 6:30pm at our new Mount Pleasant office! Look here to RSVP. As always, our office is here to lend a hand whenever we can. As we continue this new year, please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to be heard on any issue at any time. We’re here to help.
