Right now, 1/6 of the U.S. population lives in economically distressed communities, where workers are being left behind and experiencing higher unemployment rates than the national average.

Growing up in Port Angeles, I saw firsthand what happens when an economy struggles. When the timber industry took it on the chin, many of my friends' parents lost their jobs, which left a lasting impact on me. That's why I'll never stop working to protect workers and communities so that no one gets left behind in our economy.

I introduced the RECOMPETE Act to establish a new grant program to invest in communities that have faced long-term economic challenges. And I'm proud to have seen a pilot version of this program be signed into law as part of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022!

Beginning this year, hard-hit communities can use these grants to invest in workforce, infrastructure, and more to help communities get back on their feet.
