Working Toward a Budget

This week, legislative leaders and Gov. Walz announced the committee targets, which sets budget allocations for each issue area. Our second committee deadline is today, and we have been meeting all day and into the evening all week to meet the timeline for bills to be heard in committees.

This week, I presented the Education Policy [ [link removed] ] bill in the Education Finance Committee [ [link removed] ]. As chair of Education Policy, I outlined the provisions of the bill and took questions from committee members. Eventually, the bill will become part of the education finance budget.

The literacy bill [ [link removed] ] was also heard in the Education Finance Committee this week. The measure modifies literacy requirements, appropriates money for grants and professional development for teachers, and a literacy specialist at the Department of Education.

Speaking of helping our kids learn, last Friday, Gov. Walz signed the universal school meals bill into law. This is an excellent way to make sure our kids are ready to learn and can thrive by providing breakfast and lunch. Looks like the kids and Gov. Walz all thought it was a pretty good day!
