The NDWA DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) Chapter recently celebrated its 5-year anniversary! 

Since its founding, the DMV Chapter has been busy organizing domestic workers for better wages and improved working conditions. Over the last few years, the Chapter played a lead role in local coalitions to win rights, recognition and safety for all low-wage workers. This includes helping win the 2022 passage of the DC Domestic Worker Bill of Rights and the 2021 passage of the Virginia Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

The DMV crew celebrated this milestone with a party for chapter members, their families and allied organizations.

Every child in North Carolina deserves an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. But right now, the state’s child care system is in crisis, and too many children are missing out on foundational early care and learning. Families can’t afford the high cost, teachers can’t afford to work for such low wages, and providers can’t afford to keep their doors open. With federal COVID relief funding about to run out, North Carolina has reached a tipping point. 

We invite all providers, early educators, parents, advocates, and supporters in North Carolina to join us in Raleigh on Thursday, April 20th, 2023 for the  Child Care for NC: United for Change General Assembly.

In order to send a powerful message to decision makers, we must mobilize North Carolinians from across the state to stand together in support of a new way. We strongly empower all those with concerns about early education to join us on April 20th.

The New Jersey Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, S723/A822, if made into law, would guarantee basic legal rights for New Jersey’s 50,000 domestic workers. Not only would it end the exclusions of domestic workers from protections under New Jersey’s employment laws, but it would create robust protections to ensure fair working conditions and recourse against abusive and exploitative conditions in the workplace.

Help us get one step closer to victory by emailing your elected officials TODAY and urging them to make passing the New Jersey Domestic Worker Bill of Rights a priority.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we want to take another opportunity to lift up the countless domestic workers who have been leaders in the racial justice, labor, and women’s movements throughout history. 

Women like Juana Colón.

Juana Colón was the daughter of formerly enslaved parents in Comerío, Puerto Rico. A lifelong defender of labor unions, she marched with striking cigar workers in 1917 and 1919 and was famous for her public speeches as a labor organizer.
