LIFT the BAR, Bilingual Training, and Health Coverage |
Dear John,
This week we’re sharing some details on our upcoming Lift the Bar Act week of action and a final reminder to register for our bilingual health promoters training next week. Read on to learn more. |
Updates: Lift the Bar Act |
PIF anticipates the reintroduction of the LIFT the BAR Act this spring. This landmark legislation restores access to programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP, by removing the five-year bar and other barriers that deny critical care and aid to people who are lawfully present. We don’t know yet exactly when the LIFT the BAR Act will be reintroduced–so in the meantime, here’s the quick snapshot: The LIFT the BAR Act |
-
The Lifting Immigrant Families Through Benefits Access Restoration (LIFT the BAR Act). (In the last Congress, the bill numbers were: HR 5227, Rep. Jayapal / S 4311, Sen. Hirono) will soon be reintroduced
-
Key provisions of the LIFT the BAR Act:
-
Repeal the five-year bar in Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Make people who have DACA, TPS, and other lawfully present immigrants eligible for many federal safety net programs
|
Broad support in Congress, among Advocates, and the Public
|
-
The House version had 100 cosponsors in the 117th Congress, and the Senate version had 11 cosponsors
-
More than 750 organizations nationwide urged congressional leadership to pass the bill
-
Polling found that 74% of voters support reversing the five-year bar, including majorities of Republicans, Independents, and Democrats

We will keep you posted as we learn more about plans for reintroduction of this important legislation. And to shape our advocacy work, join PIF’s Federal Advocacy Working Group. |

#ProtectFamilies: 4 Steps Your State Can Take |
|
|
Starting in April, states will begin re-assessing Medicaid eligibility for the first time since 2020. The US government estimates 18 million people could lose Medicaid. Immigrant families face additional barriers, but states can do a lot to #ProtectFamilies.
We recently shared four ideas on Twitter. Please check those out and encourage your state’s leaders to implement all four as a good start. And please retweet to help us get the word. |
