Dear Friends,

As the weather heats up, so do community events! This past week, our team hosted 3 Hunger Simulations for the Junior League of Philadelphia and residents at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Hunger Simulations are interactive experiences designed to help people understand the many barriers, challenges, and frustrations of food insecurity that 16% of Philadelphians face every day. Participants get an overview of food insecurity before being assigned a profile with a specified income and life circumstances. They then try to obtain food to feed their household for a week through a mock County Assistance Office (for SNAP benefits), a small corner store, and a free food pantry.

We host these simulations to increase understanding and awareness of food insecurity in the community. If you’re interested in learning more or hosting a hunger simulation for your volunteers, staff, or students, reach out to our Community Educator, Alison Volz ([email protected]).

Our Team is Growing

Policy & Advocacy

State Budget: On March 7, Governor Shapiro outlined his proposed state budget for fiscal year 2023-2024. While this is just the first step, Governor Shapiro included some provisions that would support Pennsylvanians experiencing food insecurity. These provisions include increasing the minimum SNAP benefit, extending the universal free school breakfast program, increasing the minimum wage, and more.

Medicaid Continuous Coverage Ending: Since March 2020, states have been required to maintain Medical Assistance, also known as Medicaid, coverage and barred terminations for most enrollees. Starting April 1, this continuous coverage requirement will end. States will start sending out renewals, and families will be responsible for filling them out in order to keep their coverage.

SNAP Hotline In Action

A single mother of four needed to complete her SNAP Annual Renewal and called our Hotline asking for assistance. This client did not have a social security number, so it was very difficult to submit a renewal through the usual system. Instead, our SNAP Hotline Manager completed and submitted a new application for this client and requested that the County Assistance Office (CAO) process it as her renewal. The CAO accepted this, and we were able to ensure this client's benefits continued uninterrupted.

Our SNAP Hotline team is here to help! Whether you're applying for or renewing benefits, our experienced counselors want to make the process as easy as possible for you.

 MAKE A STAND AGAINST HUNGER!

We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
