9,493 gun deaths, 119 mass shootings, 386 children and teens killed.
These are the statistics of the gun violence epidemic in our country this year alone. And yes, there have only been 83 days of 2023.
Today is the 5 year anniversary of the first March For Our Lives – born out of the tragedy and bravery of students who faced the unthinkable at the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.
Despite its tragic founding, March For Our Lives has now grown into a courageous youth-led movement dedicated to promoting civic engagement, education, and direct action by youth to eliminate the epidemic of gun violence. We applaud their important work.
Passing gun safety legislation at the federal and state levels is the only way forward. Last year, with a Democratic majority, we passed and signed into law the first major gun control legislation in decades, but we need to keep pushing.
Extremist Republicans in Congress have repeatedly chosen political and monetary gain thanks to the gun lobby, over the wellbeing of our children and families. The gun violence epidemic in our country has impacted the lives of millions of people and we cannot keep living like this.
