Legislative Update

This week the Isle Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards ceremony to recognize just some of the great business people in our district. I want to recognize Ronda Skoog and First National Bank for their awards as well as outgoing chamber president Nick Skogen for his excellent work in the business community. The chamber is a great asset to our community and helps our local businesses grow. I look forward to the future as Daren Stenvold takes the reigns as president.

In the Capitol Investment committee, I presented two bills that are on the path to be included in future investment packages. These were HF 616 [ [link removed] ] and HF 920 [ [link removed] ] for the Morrison County Historical Society and the Camp Ripley Military Museum respectively. Another important project also received a hearing this week was the Lake Shamineau [ [link removed] ] high water management infrastructure project These projects will be important additions to share our history and improve our water.

Neighboring Representative Isaac Schultz presented my Aitken Co. Habitat for Humanity [ [link removed] ] legislation to the Housing Policy and Finance committee. Habitat for Humanity does amazing work helping those in need with housing. I am proud to be carrying this legislation for all of those seeking safe and reliable housing in our community so that we can help lift them up.

This week Governor Walz along with Speaker Hortman and Senate President Champion unveiled a 17.9 billion dollar net increase over the previous budget. This means the state would spend nearly $72 billion in the next two-year budget cycle. This aggressive budget fails to address some of the biggest issues our state is facing right now.

The budget is a massive increase in government agencies and employees; doesn?t address the nursing home shortages and worker pay, and creates a massive set of mandates to go along with the new education spending.? We have not recovered academically from the last three years learning loss yet the proposed education bills add mandates for lunches, ethnic studies, and employment payments. This will spend through the entire surplus without any middle class tax relief.

On the House Floor Democrats brought forward another of their ?Sanctuary State? bill, House File 146 [ [link removed] ]. This extreme legislation requires our state will be a legal asylum to those seeking to subject children to gender transition hormones and surgeries. Even those who are not their legal parents as long as they state to the court they are acting in the child's ?best interests?. We should absolutely not be allowing this medical malpractice on children. Beyond that this bill also is likely a violation of the Fair Faith and Credit Clause of the constitution as Minnesota will arbitrarily be deciding that we will no longer recognize the laws of other states.

Sacred Heart Church [ [link removed] ] is hosting their Lenten Fish fry this evening. This is a great opportunity to share a delicious meal with our neighbors and get to know the members of our community. I look forward to sharing great company this season with all of you across the district.
