Last February, in the middle of a treacherous ice storm in Upstate New York, Farm Sanctuary received a call that stopped us in our tracks.

Four calves were fighting for their lives on a Pennsylvania dairy farm about three hours away from our Watkins Glen shelter. When our Emergency Rescue Team arrived, they found seven dead calves inside a dark, filthy barn. Beside them, tethered in place by their necks, were Nina, Rosie, Rodger, and Chanterelle. They were weak, dangerously malnourished, and in urgent need of care.

In addition to saving Nina, Rosie, Rodger, and Chanterelle, we were also called to the scene of a large-scale neglect case in Western New York, where 17 sheep, two goats, and a bull calf had been left out in the freezing cold without food, water, or shelter.

Some of these animals have become permanent residents of Farm Sanctuary. Others found forever homes through our Farm Animal Adoption Network. Unlike America’s farming industries, which tear babies from their mothers and prevent animals from forming loving bonds, we made sure that all of the families and friends from this rescue will be able to stay together forever.
