Associated Wholesale Grocers said its consolidated company sales in 2022 rose 13.65% from 2021 to reach a record $12.3 billion, thanks to the retail cooperative's growth strategy. "We achieved these remarkable results through same-store sales increases to member stores and new member growth, and overcoming expense escalations," said President and CEO David Smith.

Employee hiring/retention is the top challenge facing 57% of supply chain executives, followed closely by a talent shortage, disruptions or product shortages, out-of-stock items and meeting customization demands among consumers, according to MHI research. Nearly half of supply chain executives are feeling more pressure to adopt sustainability measures, with most of them focusing on electrification, and 74% are boosting technology and innovation investments, as 90% of them are allocating more than $1 million to their endeavors.

"The same motivation that can result in a negative review stemming from disappointment can be redirected towards evangelism if you're open-minded about why the disappointment occurred to begin with," Bishop writes.

Preparation for a difficult conversation is key so that you go in knowing what you'll say, keeping an open mind to what the other person will say and being open to new information that may change how you perceive the situation, says Brooke Vuckovic, a clinical professor of leadership at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. "When you say, 'I'm interested in your perspectives on this,' simply by asking the question, you are less likely to defend against things that they raise, and you're giving them space for having that conversation," Vuckovic says.
