National Airport security officers authorize strike
Dozens of Butler security officers, who are critical to keeping Reagan National Airport safe, have voted to authorize a strike, if necessary. At issue, reports 32BJ SEIU, are their demands for wages and health care comparable to other security officers in the region who earn $20 per hour with employer-paid health care. The non-union officers could walk off the job as soon as next week. “Our safety is always at risk,” said 58-year old Audrey Lewis. “We are the first line of defense for gates leading onto the tarmac.” Fellow Butler officer Dehab Mohammed, a single mother of two young kids who must rely on SNAP benefits to feed her family, said that “I struggle to pay rent, car notes, car insurance and, I'm often late on my gas and internet bills.”

Solidarity Center Report: Winning Protection Against Violence and Harassment for Women Workers in Kyrgyzstan
Union women in Kyrgyzstan advocating their government ratify a global treaty to end gender-based violence and harassment at work marked a milestone in the process: publication of draft legislation. The move is the result of a three-year Solidarity Center-supported campaign to educated government officials, labor inspectors nd the public on Convention 190, adopted in 2019 by the International Labor Organization. The convention is a powerful tool to combat discrimination and harassment in the world of work, says Eldiyar Karachalov, chair of the Republican Committee of the Trade Union of Construction and Building Materials Workers. March 24 Groundbreaking on the first section of the New York City subway system, from City Hall to the Bronx. According to the New York Times, this was a worker’s review of the digging style of the well-dressed Subway Commissioners: "I wouldn't give th' Commish'ners foive cents a day fer a digging job. They're too shtiff" – 1900 March 25 146 workers are killed in a fire at New York’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, a disaster that would launch a national movement for safer working conditions - 1911

San Francisco brewery workers begin a 9-month strike as local employers follow the union-busting lead of the National Brewer’s Assn. and fire their unionized workers, replacing them with scabs. Two unionized brewers refused to go along, kept producing beer, prospered wildly and induced the Association to capitulate. A contract benefit since having unionized two years earlier, certainly worth defending: free beer – 1868
