WASHINGTON, DC – On the 13th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Leader, released the following statement:
"Thirteen years ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law and millions of families gained health care coverage for the first time in their lives. It is because of the relentless efforts of congressional Democrats – led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi – that tens of millions of Americans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they cannot be denied coverage because of a preexisting condition. And last year, House Democrats built on this historic legislation by passing the Inflation Reduction Act, which lowered health insurance premiums, gave Medicare the ability to negotiate the price of prescription drugs and capped the price of insulin at $35 a month for seniors.
While House Democrats have fought to expand health care coverage for working families, extreme MAGA Republicans have continued their dangerous march to roll back the Affordable Care Act, strip away coverage for people with preexisting conditions and gut Medicare and Medicaid. Democrats will always work to protect these lifesaving programs and ensure that every American has access to high-quality, affordable health care."
