John,

Time is running out to include access to legal representation for immigrants in New York’s FY24 budget. We need your support in the final push to ensure New York State champions justice, equity, and due process for ALL!

While we’ve secured historic levels of legal and social services funding in this year’s one-house budgets thanks to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Speaker Carl Heastie, Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, and Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, it’s not enough. We need Governor Hochul to meet the legislature’s $120 million investment and include the Access to Representation Act in the final budget to ensure everyone who needs legal representation has access to this lifesaving service!

If our leaders in Albany fail to pass the Access to Representation Act this year, the consequences could be catastrophic. Not only would they condemn countless immigrants, including children, to a cruel fate wherein they are forced to represent themselves, but they leave people vulnerable to exorbitantly expensive and potentially exploitative lawyers as they try to navigate a complex legal system, often in a language that is not their own.

We’re headed to Albany on March 28th to demand the inclusion of the Access to Representation Act ([link removed]) in this year’s budget to keep New York families together! Register by this Friday, March 28th for a seat on the bus from NYC, Western New York, Finger Lakes, Central New York, Hudson Valley, Long Island, and the North Country as we advocate for our immigrant communities!

We have lobbied both in district ([link removed]) and in Albany ([link removed]) , published op-eds ([link removed]) , held panels ([link removed]) , gained support ([link removed]) from unions ([link removed]) and the Attorney General ([link removed]) , and even made it into the one house budgets ([link removed]) —but in the final negotiations, everything is on the chopping block. It’s critical we demonstrate the power behind the Access to Representation Act to show Governor Hochul the
stakes of this legislation!

If you can’t join us in Albany, please use your voice to lend support to our campaign. It takes less than a minute to demand justice for immigrant New Yorkers. ([link removed]) How will you advocate for immigrant New Yorkers in the NYS budget?

Onward,

Kayla Kelechian
