Nowadays a lot of people know us solely for our Boebert work, however, it’s worth revisiting how we made unseating extremist members of Congress our specialty.

In case you aren’t familiar with Madison Cawthorn he was your typical Tea Party ghoul - a gun toting, racist, and corrupt, promoter of the Trump stolen election theory.

Much like how your average Coloradan feels about having Lauren Boebert represent them, as a North Carolinian I was ashamed to have Madison Cawthorn representing me and my state in Congress. It was because of this that I decided to co-found American Muckrakers PAC with the sole mission of unseating him.

From the very get go the focus of our organization was facts - this gave us credibility with voters, donors, and most importantly sources.

As we grew in size and in credibility we began to get more and more tips from North Carolinians who had experienced Cawthorns crass behavior. Our first big break came when we caught wind of Cawthorn having been arrested for attempting to bring a gun onto a plane. We quietly obtained the recorded police radio traffic at the airport and released the scoop to the media and voters. Ultimately this story would prompt a crackdown at the Asheville Airport. After the story broke, the airport commission made it official policy to arrest anyone attempting to bring a gun through security.

Later, we were told from a source that everywhere that Madison Cawthorn went he brought with him a 4” dagger hidden at the back of his wheelchair. With that information in mind we began pouring through photos of him and found that he had brought this dagger with him to Elementary Schools! Parents like myself were outraged as it is a crime in North Carolina to bring a deadly weapon into a school or even on school property.

After dropping enough stories like these we earned a reputation as the one stop shop for releasing dirt on Cawthorn right in time for his closely contested 2022 Republican Primary.

Then, in the run up to the primary, an anonymous source sent us a video of Madison Cawthorn engaging in lewd behavior with one of his staffers ie; Cawthorn pinning down the staffer and violently humping their face. The source had attempted to plant the story with various local press outlets but because of the salacious nature of the video they were afraid to touch it.

After verifying the video to be true we then spread it across the internet by hosting it on our website. From there it spread like wildfire receiving major national coverage from outlets like CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, New York TImes, and more. Less than a week after we dropped the video, Cawthorn lost his primary in a close race that came down to less than 1400 votes.

We owe much of our success to our team of online volunteer sleuths made up of former lawyers, accountants, and even a former librarian, who help us with vetting the tips that we receive. At the time of Cawthorn's primary we had raised less than $100,000 but thanks to this team we were able to take this shoestring budget and punch way above our weight class.

We don’t take all the credit for Cawthorn’s loss - we were proud to have been part of a broad coalition of North Carolinians who worked to unseat him. However, we played our part and because of us and the coalition we were a part of, there is now one less tea party extremist in Congress.
