john,

Thirteen years ago today, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. This was historic legislation that made health care more accessible for millions of Americans.

As a pediatrician and person with Type 1 diabetes, I knew how life-changing this legislation was for my patients and other people like me. Tens of millions of people across this country who weren’t insured before, finally had the sense of security that comes with affordable access to insurance and medical care.

I never imagined I would run for office, but when Congressional Republicans tried to overturn the Affordable Care Act in 2017, I joined with three other doctors from my clinic and met with our representative’s staff to explain all of the ways the ACA protects people in this district, and why it was so critical. Two days later, our congressman voted to overturn the ACA.

That was the final straw for me, so I packed up my office and left the job I love to run for Congress. I had a sense that I could do more good for more children and families in Washington's 8th District from a seat in the House of Representatives than I ever could in the 4 walls of my exam room. And since there were exactly zero women doctors in Congress at that time, I also knew we needed my voice to stand up for women’s reproductive rights, which were on the Republican chopping block.

Thanks to the support of this incredible grassroots team, we flipped WA-08 blue for the first time ever in 2018 and kept it blue in 2020 and 2022. Since coming to Congress, one of my top priorities has always been ensuring every person has access to the care they need. That's why I'm fighting to protect the ACA, lower the cost of prescription drugs, and expand access to health care.

Today, a record-breaking 35 million people receive health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act, and in Washington State, we've seen our uninsured rate cut by more than half. But despite the progress we've made, Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans have made repealing the ACA a top priority.

As your congresswoman, I'll always fight back against these attacks and work to ensure that every person has access to the care they need. But I need your support to ensure I can continue this important fight.

On the 13th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act becoming law, will you chip in to help protect my seat so I can continue fighting to expand access to affordable health care in Congress?
