Hi John, The statement “all men are created equal” doesn’t mean the same thing it did in 1776. While we’ve made progress to rectify the lack of clarity, still nowhere in any of our governing documents are the words “all men AND women are equal…” But, in the Connecticut constitution, it does. |
In 1974, the voters of our state overwhelmingly chose to add two words to our equal protection clause “No person shall be denied the equal protection of the law … because of religion, race, color, ancestry, national origin or sex.” On November 27, 1974, Connecticut voted for gender equality.
In that same election, we elected the first female governor in the nation - Ella T. Grasso.
