Fellow Democrats,
Far-right extremists are waging an unhinged war against our educational system across the country. We all need to pay attention – because the local extremists are counting on voter apathy and low voter turnout to bring Florida values to Illinois.
FIRST: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis implemented chilling, radical, and wide-sweeping book ban laws that required school districts to investigate and decide on what books to ban individually.
THEN: Hundreds of books were banned from Florida schools, including dozens with LGBTQ+ themes, protagonists of color, or discussions of race and racism, and even classics such as Slaughterhouse-Five and The Handmaid’s Tale.
NOW: DeSantis is trying to paint rigorous reporting on the book bans as a “hoax,” going so far as claiming that the well-documented instances of entire classroom libraries being emptied simply did not happen.
Candidates looking to carry out similar book bans here in Illinois are on the ballot IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS, and they have support from top Illinois Republicans like Darren Bailey. Just last month, Governor Ron DeSantis paid a visit to Illinois to try to spread his extremist nonsense and boost his profile ahead of his run for President. Though we were heartened to see many protesters of his vile message, we were also disturbed to see the wave of his allies and supporters turnout to support his message, including failed candidate for Governor Darren Bailey.
Like we’ve said all along, this campaign of hatred isn’t just a Florida problem.
We can’t let Florida happen here in Illinois. We can’t be led by fear. We can’t let those who want to drag us back to intolerance and hate get into positions of power.
