These days, the faces of #cut50’s Dignity for Incarcerated Women campaign have been all over Essence Magazine. Pamela Winn from Georgia, Tonie Willis from Pennsylvania, and Valencia Gunder from Florida have all been featured for their work fighting to pass Dignity legislation in their states – bills that bring urgently needed reforms to women in state prisons.
Dignity Ambassadors like Pam, Tonie, and Valencia understand reforms like this can’t wait because they are formerly incarcerated women themselves. After having to construct their own menstrual products out of toilet paper while incarcerated, Valencia and Tonie know the importance of menstrual equity inside prisons. After miscarrying her child during a fall while shackled, Pam knows the importance of protections for pregnant women inside of prisons.
Will you chip in to help #cut50 Dignity Ambassadors like Pam, Tonie, and Valencia continue fighting for menstrual equity, protections for pregnant women, and more inside of women’s prisons? For today only, any contribution you make will be doubled by a generous donor. <[link removed]>
At the Dream Corps, we believe humanization and legislation can create long-lasting change for directly impacted populations. That's why our #cut50 Dignity Ambassadors work with state legislators and coalition partners to bring their voices into the process of policy-making.
Can you help us bring even more voices to the table by making a one time donation? <[link removed]>Policies should work for the people, not against them, and #cut50's Dignity Ambassadors play a crucial role in humanizing the lived experiences of real people for policymakers. These face-to-face meetings with lawmakers can mean the difference between taking meaningful action on an issue and total ignorance of the struggles incarcerated women face.
As Tonie puts it:
“I think it’s taken so long because a lot of people didn’t know. They didn’t know what was really going on behind the walls,” she said. “Even now, when I go up to Harrisburg, to the Capitol to speak to the legislators, and I talk about some of the challenges of incarceration, they’re shocked. They didn’t know.”
#cut50's Dignity Ambassadors are working hard to change hearts and minds around the country and pave paths for meaningful criminal justice reform. We've passed Dignity bills in 10 states so far, and we’re going to pass ten more, including the bill Tonie is fighting for right now in Pennsylvania.
That's right, we said ten more. We have an ambitious goal of passing Dignity for Incarcerated Women bills in 20 states by 2020.And with your help, we can get there. Your donation tonight can help us reach this ambitious goal and spur urgent reforms in state prisons across the country. <[link removed]>
Valencia and Pam both celebrated success earlier this year when their Dignity bills became law, and we know that Dignit Ambassadors like Tonie can see success too with the right support. We can't wait to share with you what these tremendously brave women accomplish.
In community,
The #cut50 team
Ps. An incredibly generous donor who cares deeply about criminal justice reform is matching donations made in the month of July dollar-for-dollar. But we only have one more night to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity to raise the bar for what women like Tonie, Valencia, and Pam can accomplish with even more support. Will you help us make the most of this opportunity for #cut50's Dignity Ambassadors by making a one-time donation tonight? <[link removed]>
