The North Carolina state Supreme Court re-heard a case last week on the extreme gerrymandering that Republicans tried to pass during the last redistricting session. Previously, the Court struck those maps down. Neither the underlying facts of the case nor the applicable law have changed. The only thing that changed is that the partisan makeup of the Court has shifted to the right.

If the Court reverses its decision in this case, it will undermine the rule of law. The judicial branch is meant to serve as a check on other branches of government. And if the Court okays this right-wing gerrymander, they’ll take power away from the people and give the GOP an edge in the legislative elections to come.
