John, As part of a sprawling, multifaceted campaign to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, attorneys for the Trump campaign funded and directed an effort to gain access to voting machines, copy sensitive election system software, and share that software covertly with their network. Not only should this be investigated for possible crimes related to Donald Trump’s plot to overturn the election - but the unauthorized, covert sharing of election system software among extremists could pose threats to election security in 2024 and beyond. Yet, it appears that neither the FBI nor the Justice Department has taken any action to open an investigation. The message is clear: Without an investigation, Trump allies’ efforts to illegally copy voting software will not be prosecuted, and the threats to our election security will not be addressed. If people who had engaged in efforts to undermine and overthrow our elected government officials then were going to access the software that controls other critical national security assets, we would expect a federal investigation. So why is nothing being done here? Sign our petition: Demand an investigation into copied election software. Big Lie proponents are already using the voting software at issue in disinformation campaigns. Earlier this month, Trump supporters gave a presentation at CPAC - using the unlawfully obtained software - that claimed to show evidence that Trump won in 2020 due to fraud. Last year, Free Speech For People organized a coalition of security and election advocates and sent a letter to federal investigators, including Attorney General Merrick Garland and Special Counsel Jack Smith, outlining the threats posed by unlawfully copying and distributing voting software, and calling for a federal investigation. If left unchecked, the copied information and software pose a dangerous threat during the next election cycle. For the sake of preserving faith in our democracy, we must ensure that our voting infrastructure is secure. Failing to investigate this breach of voting software by Trump-allied extremists represents a threat to future elections that cannot be ignored. Sign if you agree: The federal government must conduct a thorough investigation into Trump supporters’ efforts to copy and covertly share election software.
