Dear John,

Today is the 13th anniversary of President Obama signing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – and I’m not exaggerating when I say this legislation saved my life.

Let me explain. When I was 7, my mom and I were diagnosed with a genetic condition requiring costly medical care for our whole lives. Prior to the ACA, our access to care wasn’t guaranteed – we constantly worried our pre-existing conditions would cost us our health care or we wouldn’t be able to afford extra premiums.

Under the ACA, my mom and I knew we’d have access to care no matter what.

The ACA saved my life, but it’s being threatened with major cuts. We have a chance to fight for it now. Sign our petition to protect federal care programs. [[link removed]]

Care policies like the ACA and Medicaid are currently at-risk of being cut by trillions of dollars due to ongoing negotiations about the debt ceiling. This could affect tens of millions of people like my mom and me.

The ACA allowed my mom to get the care she needed so she could keep her job and stay in the best possible health. It also allowed me to have access to care under her insurance as I experienced medical crisis after medical crisis throughout my twenties. The ACA also set out-of-pocket maximums for prescriptions, copays, and other medical costs, which cut down astronomical costs.

The ACA made care more accessible for both of us and kept me alive. Without ACA health insurance coverage and mental health care, I would not have survived.

Here’s the urgent thing. Programs like the ACA, Medicare, and Medicaid are on the chopping block as the debt ceiling is being negotiated. We need to make sure our elected leaders know that can’t happen.

We fought for the ACA and Medicaid once before in 2017, and we’re going to fight for it again. Please join us in the fight. The more of us who rise up in support of care, the more power we have to make sure Congress doesn’t make devastating cuts.

Tell Congress: No cuts to federal care! [[link removed]]

In the past 13 years, the ACA has done so much to expand care and save lives. My story is unique to me, but millions of people around the country share similar stories. We can’t afford not to take action, and it’ll take all of us coming together to protect these life-saving care programs.

Thank you for advocating for care.

With care,
