Today, March 23, is the day that the Affordable Care Act was passed into law 13 years ago. It’s an important day for me because the ACA – and indeed the vote to repeal it in 2017 – played a major role in motivating me to run for office in 2018. And it all goes back to my mom.

My mom passed away in 2011 from ovarian cancer. When she was originally diagnosed, she didn’t have health insurance – she had let it lapse a few months earlier. She had struggled to afford health insurance for years because, before the ACA, it was totally legal for insurance companies to charge more to people who happened to have a pre-existing condition. My mom had had breast cancer 30 years before, so her health insurance bill was her highest bill every single month. Higher than her rent.

My mom is also the reason that May 4, 2017 was an important date for me. That was the day the Republican House repealed the ACA.

I was sitting in my living room watching live CNN coverage of the Rose Garden ceremony President Trump held after the House vote. I caught sight of my then-Congressman, smiling and beaming with pride that he had just voted to repeal protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

That was it. Something inside of me broke. We decided that day we would fire him, and in November 2018, we did just that.

So today, it is particularly meaningful to celebrate the anniversary of the ACA's passage. Elections matter. Legislation matters. Hard work on big problems matters.

I’m running for Senate because no family should have to deal with a loved one’s illness at the same time they run this risk of bankruptcy. No family should have to choose between paying medical bills and covering other basics they need, like food or transportation.
