My local Indivisible group is doing the hard work of holding our Republican MoC accountable and now he’s lashing out Hi Indivisibles! I’m Kierstyn, I’m on the leadership team of Indivisible Bucks County in Pennsylvania, and this is how my Member of Congress described our group to a local news outlet:
“Indivisible is the QAnon of the left…They are a far-left ideological fringe organization that seek to rip democracy apart at the seams...”
Pretty intense right? You’re probably wondering who this Member of Congress is, and why they’d say something so nasty. Let’s take those questions in order.
What Member of Congress lashed out at Indivisible in such an unhinged way?
You’ve probably never heard of my Member of Congress -- and that’s the way he wants it. Brian Fitzpatrick is one of 18 Republicans in 2022 who won in a district carried by Joe Biden in 2020. Like the other members of this group -- Indivisible calls them ‘The Unrepresentatives’ -- Fitzpatrick wants to fly below the radar.
That’s because the Unrepresentatives have politics that don’t really align with their districts. So instead of fighting for their constituents, they follow a different sort of playbook to get reelected: take loads of cash from right-wing megadonors, vote however these donors want, and hope their voters don’t find out about it.
That last part is critical to the plan. Unrepresentatives like Fitzpatrick know if voters get a whiff of what they are actually doing in Congress, they will lose their seats because -- despite all of their efforts to portray themselves as common sense moderates -- they cast vote after vote for MAGA policies.
At the end of the day, Brian Fitzpatrick’s voting record is not too far from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s. The main difference is she’s loud about it, whereas he wants to keep it really quiet.
Which brings us to why he lashed out against Indivisible Bucks County.
Fitzpatrick had just found out he’d been added to our Unrepresentatives program, which seeks to make these 18 members famous and shine a light on their extreme records.
How do you do that when you have a member like Fitzpatrick who refuses to hold town halls or publicly answer constituent questions? Well, last week, we held a rally outside his district office to voice our concerns. His staff wouldn’t speak to us (someone actually called the police on us), but we stood outside anyway and invited folks to fill out constituent letters. We spoke about the issues that matter most to us, and we made it clear that Fitzpatrick doesn’t represent our community.
Then we used Fitzpatrick’s unhinged attack on us to put more press attention on his MAGA complicity and show just how hostile he is to his own constituents.
Despite what Fitzpatrick might call us, we’re not crazy conspiracy theorists. We’re ordinary members of the community he’s supposed to represent. We care about our democracy and abortion rights and we deserve to have a congressperson who reflects our values.
We also know we’re not the only ones who feel unrepresented. There are plenty of Indivisibles who live in districts like mine. I know that together, if we continue organizing our communities, we can win the representation we deserve.
To get to that point, I’m asking you to do two things today:
- Join your local Indivisible group. Whether you live in a deep red district, a blue district, or a purple one like mine, we need folks organizing across the country. The first step to building the fair and equitable society we all want to live in is coming together with other like-minded folks in our communities.
We know that one rally won’t be enough to hold Fitzpatrick and others like him accountable, but we’ll continue to do this work day in and day out until we have Members of Congress who actually represent us.
In solidarity, Kierstyn Zolfo Indivisible Bucks County
