Dear John,

We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. In Maine, the number of species listed as endangered is growing. The leading causes of this decline: habitat loss and habitat degradation.

Together with our partners in Maine’s Environmental Priorities Coalition, we’re working to advance a new bill this legislative session to protect endangered and threatened species habitat in Maine – LD 1246, “An Act to Include Endangered and Threatened Species Habitat in the Definition of ‘Significant Wildlife Habitat’ Under the Natural Resources Protection Act.”1

We need to act now to protect as many species as we can from extinction. Will you show your support by signing our petition today?

Sign the Petition: Support Habitat Protection

Currently, most proposed development projects reviewed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection do not evaluate impacts to Maine’s most vulnerable species. This bill will expand the circumstances in which endangered and threatened species habitat is considered in the permit review process, improving protections for species such as the New England Cottontail, Grassland Sparrow, the Blanding’s Turtle, and more.

It’s extremely rare for a permit to be denied based on these reviews. And usually only small adjustments are needed to improve outcomes for vulnerable species.

LD 1246 will minimize or avoid the impacts to endangered and threatened species habitat that come with development. Maine needs to take this critical step to protect our state’s cherished biodiversity. Add your name to help protect endangered and threatened species habitat in Maine.

Thank you for taking action,
