Jack, 20 years ago, the United States invaded Iraq. After eight years of brutal conflict that killed more than half a million people and cost nearly $3 trillion, many Americans better understand the recklessness of that invasion and true cost of war, and now seek to avoid it when possible.
However, the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force Against Iraq (1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMF) can still be used to take the U.S. into the next war, whether or not Americans want it.

The 1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMFs are vague and overly broad, allowing both Democratic and Republican administrations to justify numerous interventions and drone strikes around the world. The Obama administration cited the 2002 Iraq AUMF as one of the legal justifications for strikes in Iraq and Syria. Donald Trump used it to justify the continued use of force against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, while threatening to use it elsewhere.
Only Congress has the power to decide when and where the U.S. goes to war. No matter our political affiliation, we all understand that checks and balances are critical when lives are at stake.

After 20 years of sustained activism and advocacy, Congress seems ready to finally reassert its constitutional responsibility by repealing the 1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMFs. There is overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate, and President Biden has indicated that he will sign a repeal. Now, we need to get the legislation through the House. A similar measure easily passed the House during the last session by a vote of 268-161.
Repealing the 1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMFs is long overdue. They have cost us countless lives, billions of dollars, and kept us entrenched in an ever-growing war machine. We can end endless wars. We start by repealing outdated war powers.
