Earlier this week, I spoke with Senator "Coach" Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on Washington Watch about his efforts to stop the Biden administration's military leadership from expanding abortion, usurping congressional authority. The radical new policy of the Department of Defense (DOD) would result in abortion on demand for members of the military and their dependents at taxpayers' expense. It is estimated this aggressive policy change would expand the number of abortions in the military from 20 a year to over 4,000 abortions a year! We can't allow this to happen.

Last summer, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the Department of Defense would be changing current policy and would allow abortions on demand for all members of the military and their dependents. This would also cover transportation costs, all funded by taxpayer dollars. Senate conservatives sent three separate letters to Secretary Austin, demanding to know why the DOD was trying to unilaterally overturn the ban on taxpayer-funded abortions in the military. Incredibly, they were eventually told that this is an issue of military readiness and that more abortions will help with recruitment.

In December, Senator Tuberville sent a letter to Secretary Austin stating that he would put a hold on promotions for officers if the DOD moved forward with the new abortion policy. Such a move would require promotions for these officers to go through regular order rather than unanimous consent. In short, a process that typically takes hours could take years.

While it's unfortunate that some officers will have their promotions delayed, Sen. Tuberville understands it is necessary to protect unborn lives, to preserve congressional authority to make law, and to prevent our military from becoming an abortion business. The DOD's new policy went into effect on March 8^th.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and the Department of Defense have stepped out of bounds in usurping Congress’ lawmaking authority by implementing a radical new policy that would result in abortion on demand for members of the military and their dependents at taxpayers’ expense. It is estimated this would result in 4,000 abortions a year! We can’t allow this to happen.

The Biden administration should know that such policies will not be tolerated in the US military. I stand with Senator Tuberville as he fights to protect unborn lives, to defend the rule of law, and to prevent our military from becoming an abortion business. I also pledge to pray for Senator Tuberville and for the success of his effort to defend the unborn.
