As a first-generation Mexican American woman from a working-class background, I recognize the challenges many families across the country are facing.

It was that upbringing that led me to attend law school, become a labor rights lawyer, and what ultimately led me to Congress. But my story began with my parents.

My father was an industrial mechanic and my mother, an elementary school teacher. Their hard work and sacrifices sent all 7 of their children to college, and two of their daughters to Congress.

We broke barriers together. And it’s this reminder that continues to motivate my fight for my community. I couldn’t be prouder to become the first woman to lead BOLD PAC, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that helps elect Latino and Latina candidates across the country. But now, it’s my mission to make sure I won’t be the last Latina to serve in this role.
