Dear ,
We invite you to join Poynter in a movement that celebrates public debate, builds human connection and strengthens community. You’re invited to experience Poynter like never before.
At Poynter, we see convenings as a way to enrich your life with reliable information from award-winning journalists and experts who help us better understand the world around us.
We’re working to create space for meaningful conversations about the media, politics and current affairs. Together, we’ll break down issues of the day with purpose. And there will be plenty of chances to celebrate excellent journalism along the way.
Our goal in creating experiences that you can’t find elsewhere is simple: to deepen your connection with the craft and people of journalism. We hope you’ll leave feeling informed and empowered by credible information — and that you have a little bit of fun along the way.
Please take a look at the upcoming events below, and bookmark poynter.org/events. We’ll keep you up to speed on when new opportunities to gather arise.
Speaking of, Tampa Bay meteorologist Denis Phillips will headline our second event in the “Poynter at The Straz” speaker series on Friday, May 12. To show our appreciation for your support, you’re invited to secure your spot now ([link removed]) — before tickets go on public sale this Friday. Please use code POYNTER at checkout. Join Poynter at The Straz on Friday, May 12, for a special evening with the weatherman who keeps Tampa Bay cool: ABC Action News Chief Meteorologist Denis Phillips.
For decades, Tampa Bay residents have relied on Phillips during severe weather thanks to his calm demeanor, accuracy and nature to tell it like it is with his famous Rule No. 7: “Stop freaking out… until I tell you to. We’re fine.”
Now’s your chance to get to know this local icon and say thanks for keeping Tampa Bay informed and safe through our wild weather events. We’ll discuss the science behind Florida’s weather and climate — and its effect on Floridians, including predictions and safety tips for the 2023 hurricane season.

7 p.m. Dinner and program
The Poynter Institute’s annual Bowtie Ball showcases the most relevant personalities in journalism as we gather in Tampa Bay for one electric celebration. It’s our way of saying thank you to the journalists and their stories that keep us informed and make our democracy stronger.
Since 2015, Poynter has welcomed hundreds of supporters of the free press to don their favorite formal apparel — bow ties encouraged — for dinner, dancing and toasts with Pulitzer Prize winners, best-selling authors and media personalities from the nation’s leading newsrooms. Guests come to enjoy an immersive experience and access to internationally acclaimed journalists. They leave with insight into the powerful behind-the-scenes stories about the events that have shaped our world.
The Bowtie Ball culminates with an insightful on-stage interview with one of the nation’s most revered and respected journalists, who will be honored with the Poynter Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism. Previous recipients include Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward, Lesley Stahl, Chris Wallace, Katie Couric, Lester Holt, Judy Woodruff, Tom Brokaw and Bob Schieffer. The 10th recipient of the Poynter Medal will be announced soon.
