Today, Senator Murphy introduced brand new legislation to create an Office of Gun Violence Prevention within the Department of Justice.
Right now, there is no permanent, centralized federal effort to prevent gun violence, and this bill would make clear that this epidemic requires a long-term, national strategy with coordination at the highest levels of our government.
ADD YOUR NAMEAlready in 2023, there have been more mass shootings than days. And beyond the mass shootings that make headlines, more than 110 people die of gun violence every single day in America. But still, there is no formal, coordinated effort to end gun violence from the federal government.
This legislation would bring together government agencies and offices, survivors, public health officials, mental health clinicians, teachers, public health experts, student groups, and veterans. This office would advance gun safety policy, lead local outreach and education, coordinate all stakeholders, and maximize existing gun safety programs and services — including the administration of the National Criminal Background Check System.
Gun violence remains one of the least researched issues in relation to its mortality rate. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention would identify gaps in research and collect data and develop studies to inform policy development and strategy implementation.
Creating the Office of Gun Violence Prevention would show that our government is serious about ending the epidemic of gun violence and give us critical resources to save lives.
ADD YOUR NAMEThank you in advance for signing our petition. We have proven that together we are more powerful than the gun lobby.
