Dear Friend,
When Missouri legislators banned abortion in their state, they didn’t hide that they were imposing their personal religious beliefs on all Missourians – they literally wrote “Almighty God is the author of life” into the law.
“As a Catholic, I do believe life begins at conception,” was how the state representative who sponsored Missouri’s abortion ban justified the legislation.
Abortion bans violate the separation of church and state by enshrining one narrow religious view into the law – that’s why we sued Missouri. You can help us restore abortion rights and church-state separation with a gift today: [link removed]
The abortion ban’s sponsor wasn’t the only one citing his faith to justify imposing his anti-abortion beliefs on all Missourians. Here’s what other anti-abortion lawmakers said in official legislative testimony:
— “To me, God doesn’t give us a choice in this area. He is the Creator of life.”
— “Being from the Biblical side of it, I’ve always believed that life does occur at the point of conception.”
— “Life begins at conception. Psalms 119 says…”

Religious freedom promises each of us the freedom to make our own decisions about our own bodies based on our own beliefs. That’s why fourteen Missouri clergy members from diverse faith traditions joined the lawsuit filed by Americans United and the National Women’s Law Center, because they understand abortion bans are an unconstitutional violation of church-state separation.
Our lawsuit is different because we’re not seeking a religious exemption from abortion bans; we aim to overturn the bans entirely as unconstitutional. We don’t want an exemption for some religiously observant people and a ban for everyone else – we are coming after the bans for everyone.
Friend, please make a gift today to support our groundbreaking legal efforts to restore abortion access in Missouri: [link removed]
