John,
House Republicans are back from their retreat where they ironed out details of their legislative agenda, including severe funding cuts to critical human needs programs.
The right-wing faction of Congress is proposing funding cuts of at least 22%. Thanks to the leadership of Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), we now know that funding cuts of 22% would result in cuts to the Social Security Administration, 640,000 families could lose housing vouchers, and 60,000 teaching jobs could be lost in low-income communities. We’d lose over 100,000 affordable child care placements. More than 29,000 people would lose admission to opioid use treatment.1
These drastic cuts will be devastating for families and communities who are facing high inflation and are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. In each of these areas (and these are only a few examples), we need more and better services; far too many people who qualify for help are now on waiting lists or just denied services. We know we can invest in communities when the wealthy and corporations start paying their fair share.
Send a direct message to Congress urging them to reject right-wing budget cuts and pass President Biden's 2024 budget that invests in human needs programs.
SIGN & SEND
President Biden’s budget offers a clear contrast to right-wing extremists in Congress who are attempting to cut critical programs for working and low-income people. Instead of proposing painful austerity measures, President Biden’s budget invests in our communities by providing $59 billion to increase the affordable housing supply and add 200,000 new rental vouchers. The president proposes a state-federal partnership to provide universal free preschool, including $13.1 billion in funding for Head Start.
From providing health coverage to uninsured poor adults in states that have refused to expand their Medicaid programs to expanded Home and Community Based Services for older people and people with disabilities to protecting SNAP nutrition programs for low-income people and families, the president’s budget offers a clear contrast to right-wing extremists in Congress.
The president achieves this through the basic fairness of requiring corporations and the richest among us to pay their fair share in taxes through its 25% Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, increased stock buyback tax, taxing investment income at the same rate as income from work, and raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%.
Send a direct message to Congress telling them to pass President Biden’s FY2024 budget that ensures all of us share in the prosperity of the United States.
The United States is the wealthiest country in the world. We can afford to invest in our future by increasing taxes on the rich and corporations who have evaded their fair share for far too long.
Thank you for advocating for critical investments in our communities,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
