We know that plastic pollution is piling up in our oceans… but just how much is there?
According to new research published in the journal Plos One, 171 trillion tons of plastic particles are floating in our oceans.Collectively, they weigh as much as 40 Titanics!
If we keep this up, estimates show that by 2040, more plastics will be in the ocean than fish.
How did we get here?
Plastic production has doubled worldwide in the past 20 years… but only 9% of it gets successfully recycled.
Microplastic presence in the ocean is increasing as older plastics such as plastic bags, grocery bags, and food wrappers are breaking down.
Even with all of this mess, very little international law is set to clean up these plastics!
It’s time to get serious about removing plastics from our oceans — and our everyday lives. Plastics are clogging up our waters and leaching toxic chemicals into food chains. In our oceans, plastics are stopping one of the world’s most important carbon sinks — nature’s critical tool for fighting climate change.
John, it’s time for us to break up with our plastic dependency. If we’re going to prevent the constant flow of plastics from entering our waters, we must take preventive action seriously.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
