Texas Republicans are all about throwing up roadblocks and barriers. We’ve seen it time and again, as they gerrymander districts and suppress votes.
So we were disappointed (but not surprised) to see House Bill 232 come through.
The bill would increase the filing fee to run for state House by more than 60% — from $750 to $1,250.
What that means in practice: lots of Texans who look at our politics and say “I can make a difference” will face an even steeper climb to run for office.
And to Texas Republicans, that’s a feature, not a bug.
You see, in 2022, 41 House Republicans ran unopposed . No one stood up and called out their extremist politics, their bigotry, and their failed governance in Texas.
So those 41 House Republicans won by default , and didn't have to do a single thing to earn their constituents’ votes.
That’s a pretty sweetheart deal for Texas Republicans.
They’d like to keep it that way.
Raising the filing fee is just one way of discouraging challengers from running for office and ensuring that Republicans can hold onto power.
But here’s where you and I come in!
