In 1923, a century ago, lawmakers began introducing the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in every session of Congress, a proposed amendment that would enshrine gender equality in the Constitution.
51 years ago today, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) finally passed both houses of Congress and was sent out for ratification by the states.
By the end of the original five-year deadline, it had been ratified by 35 states, just short of the necessary 38. The fight for the ERA’s ratification continues to this day.
While we have come very far without the ERA in those 100 years, we still have a long way to go — especially in equal political representation.
