Hi John,

This week, President Biden vetoed a bill passed by Congress that had attempted to block ESG investing (environmentally and socially responsible investing). On Monday, March 27, I invite you to join me to discuss these latest developments, their impact on divestment movements, and how to take action.

Then on Wednesday the 29th, we're talking with Dr. Yara Asi, a Palestinian-American global health researcher who recently returned from doing field work in Palestine. Using examples from what she observed in Palestine, she'll share about how war is a public health threat. More details on these upcoming events below.

First, join us on Monday, March 27 at 5:00pm Pacific/8:00pm Eastern to discuss the recent controversies about ESG investing (environmentally and socially responsible investing) and the implications for our movements to divest from weapons, fossil fuels, and other destructive industries.

Earlier this month, Congress passed a resolution to overturn Biden's 2022 rule permitting ESG investment, but Biden vetoed Congress's actions - his first veto in office. Meanwhile, nationwide, there are lawsuits mounting and state-level anti-ESG legislation in the works. ESG investment is also being increasingly scapegoated for economic downturn, with the recent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank being blamed on its ESG investments.

RSVP to join World BEYOND War and our partners at CODEPINK as we talk with experts on ESG investments about what to make of these legislative and legal battles, how they may impact our divestment movements, and how to take action.

Speakers include: Andrew Behar, the CEO of As You Sow, the nation’s leading non-profit practitioner of shareholder advocacy and engagement; Hannah Reid Rubinek, a Digital Campaigner with Sunrise US, whose work focuses on the intersection of climate and finance with a focus on asset managers; and Jacey Bingler, a Senior Communications Campaigner with Sunrise US.

Then, on Wednesday, March 29 at 4:00pm Pacific/7:00pm Eastern, we'll address rising concerns about the health and human rights of Palestinians living under occupation. More Palestinians died in the West Bank in 2022 than in any year since 2006, and 2023 is shaping up to be even more deadly. After decades of impunity for countless human rights violations, Israel continues to control Palestinian movement, seize Palestinian land, and raid Palestinian cities, while enabling the violence and incitement of a rapidly expanding settler population.

Dr. Yara Asi is a Palestinian-American global health researcher who returned from doing field work in Palestine in October. On March 29, she will give a first-hand account of the situation in the West Bank and the effects on the health and well-being of Palestinians.

Yara M. Asi, PhD is an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida in the School of Health Management and Informatics and a Visiting Scholar at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. Her work focuses on health, development, and human rights in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

This event is co-sponsored by the Florida Chapter of World BEYOND War, the Veterans For Peace Chapter 136 in The Villages, FL, and Partners For Palestine, FL.

I hope to see you then!
