It can easily be taken for granted but having reliable access to safe water is a luxury. With the simple turn of the tap, we shower, bathe, quench our thirst, cook our food and keep everything clean.

But privileges like these aren’t available for the 2.2 billion people around the world who don’t have access to safe drinking water.

Safe water is urgently needed as more people face water scarcity — with almost two thirds of the world’s population experiencing it for at least one month each year — and the climate crisis creates dire emergencies like the historic drought in the Horn of Africa.


UNICEF works in over 100 countries to provide access to safe water, reliable sanitation and basic hygiene supplies. Teams are meeting water needs especially in crisis zones like Syria and Turkey.
