Last week, I emailed to see if you could take action to help end the destructive fishing of sandeels which is threatening the UK's seabirds like puffins. 

 

Since then, an incredible 83,000 people have called for the UK’s marine wildlife to be protected. Can you join them?

Hey John,

 

UK ocean wildlife is under threat. Seabirds like puffins, kittiwakes and other marine life are starving as industrial fishing trawlers hoover up their fishy food.

 

But we have an urgent opportunity to stop this. The UK Government is deciding whether to end the destructive fishing of sandeels, a vital food source for marine life in English waters. [1] 

 

Will you help convince them to take action to protect the oceans?

This month, the actions of millions of Greenpeace supporters from all over the world helped win a historic new Global Ocean Treaty. Now, we must push the UK government to act locally, in our own waters, as the ocean champions they claim to be, and step up to protect UK ocean wildlife.

 

Together, we can act - pushing the government to ban sandeel fishing which is the quickest way to help protect struggling seabirds and British marine life.

 

The UK Government has just launched a crucial consultation on potentially ending the industrial sandeel fishery in English waters. This would give wildlife like puffins a chance to thrive and ecosystems space to recover from years of depletion.

 

Will you call on the government to protect British marine life and much loved birds like puffins?

Sandeels play an integral role in the marine ecosystem - they are vital for healthy populations of fish, mammals and seabirds. But they are in decline, and together we have a unique opportunity to reverse that.

 

Stopping industrial fishing isn't just about saving puffins. Banning destructive boats means more fish for the communities around our coast that depend on more sustainable fishing. And healthy oceans that are full of life are better at sucking carbon out of the air - they can be one of our best allies against the climate crisis. So taking action to protect our oceans is good for puffins, people and the planet.
