DONATE ››› Hi John, When I worked in the service industry, a restaurant owner once told me “I own you.” It filled me with rage and shame. It’s something lots of people experience; bosses who think paying for labor means they own a person’s body. I understand what every dollar means, the value of labor and the damage wasted money does to communities, and to people. We own our bodies, even though people who pay us may try to patronize and possess us. That is perhaps nowhere more true today than the sex work industry, where many people are already working because of difficult economic circumstances. As the nation experiences more economic upheaval brought on by bad regulatory rollbacks and bad decision making from venture capitalists, it is critical to remember that upheaval will mean more instability for working people, including sex workers. Indeed, sex workers are often the first to witness signs of economic upheaval – strip clubs, for example, see declines in customers when the economy tanks. This campaign is about building economic justice and neighborhood support systems so that people don’t fall through the cracks, and so that we aren’t so vulnerable to risk vultures.
