For over a year, Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund has led the fight to pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax in Congress, which would guarantee that billionaires pay at least a 25% tax rate on their increased wealth. But the dark money group Saving America's Family Enterprises Inc. has already spent $1 million on an ad campaign in targeted states and enlisted two former U.S. senators, Wall Street Democrats Heidi Heitkamp (ND) and John Breaux (LA), in an attempt to peel away support for this critical legislation to tax billionaires.

Heitkamp is no stranger to opposing progressive economic legislation. In 2018, while Democrats were fighting tooth and nail in an attempt to re-elect Heitkamp, she was already showing her Wall Street leanings―clashing with Senator Elizabeth Warren over banking deregulations, which have now led to the crash of two mid-sized banks this month.[2]

In 2021, as a former senator, Heitkamp served as the public face of Saving America's Family Enterprises Inc. and lobbied to preserve a tax loophole ATF was fighting hard to close, which benefits the rich and powerful―a loophole that Heitkamp once called a “scam.”[3]

Now, this same dark money group is coming after the popular Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, a priority of President Biden and ATF, trying to erode support among the 74% of likely voters that support the proposal, which includes majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.[4]
