We need to act –

Each year, over 20 million Americans are exposed to dangerous levels of soot pollution. Vulnerable, low-wealth communities and people of color are most exposed to soot pollution and most harmed by the failure to curb it.

It’s no wonder this is a huge problem – the rules for how much soot that big polluters are allowed to emit have not been updated since 2012!

The US Environmental Protection Agency has released a proposal for new standards for soot pollution, but they don’t go nearly far enough to clean our air.

There is one week to send in public comments to the EPA. Public comment periods have made all the difference in the past, and if we can show enough demand, we can get the EPA to tighten up these standards.

Friend, we need your voice, even if you don’t live in a community with dangerous air quality. Tell the EPA that we need to lower soot pollution now: [link removed]

Soot pollution is so small that we inhale it into our lungs and it goes directly to our bloodstream. People who are exposed to soot can experience all kinds of health problems, including asthma, heart disease, COPD, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, low birth weight, greater risk of preterm birth, and higher rates of infant mortality.

Black, brown, and low-income communities are already burdened by pollution, and a stronger soot rule is expected to at least partially close some of the well-known racial disparities in health outcomes.

We still have the opportunity to raise our concerns and make our voices heard. The DEP has opened a public comment period that goes until Tuesday, March 28. PLEASE, take a minute to share your concerns over the impact of soot pollution on our communities: [link removed]

The EPA must take bold action if it wants to meet President Biden’s commitments to reduce dangerous pollution and ensure cleaner and safer air for our families, advance environmental justice, and protect our health.

Pennsylvanians need the EPA to significantly reduce the amount of soot that’s allowed to be released by power plants and other big polluters.

Take a minute to make sure the EPA passes and enforces updated pollution standards to protect the environment and health today: [link removed]

Thanks for all that you do.
