John,

At Washington Conservation Action, we believe in protecting people and nature as one. So, I am excited to share that we can do just that with ESSB 5371. This bill establishes a 1,000-yard buffer to protect the Southern Resident Killer Whales for all boaters passed out of the Senate and has moved to the House!

We need to continue showing strong public support for this important orca recovery bill. Please contact your Reps today urging them to support ESSB 5371! [[link removed]]

Based on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s recommendations, this bill is urgently needed because it:

- Reflects the science. Recent NOAA research found that an approach distance of 1,000 yards would achieve greater consistency with the science and improve foraging success.

- Harmonizes existing rules. A single 1,000-yard distance for all will be easier to communicate, comply with, and enforce.

- Addresses population declines. Three southern resident orcas were lost last year, and the Southern Resident Killer Whale population now consists of just 73 whales.

ESSB 5371 builds on the progress you helped make possible. Given the fragile health of the population, it is critical that the change to a 1,000-yard buffer is made this session. There is no single more effective thing we can do in the near term to help these vulnerable pods than make it easier for them to find and catch their prey–and share that prey with their young.

Thank you for your support,
