Team,
Millions of Americans across the country, including millions of Latinos
who receive Medicaid — a critical lifeline to many in the Latino community
— are facing a looming deadline.
On April 1st, states will no longer have to automatically enroll people in
Medicaid and will have the power of when and how they can cut off
automatic enrollment — a pandemic era benefit that provided a vital
lifeline for an estimated 4.6 million Latinos.
This will have a major impact on our communities. At the start of the
month, the expansion of SNAP benefits, another pandemic era benefit
expired. This program made a huge difference for those who would typically
qualify for the minimum amount of food benefits.
We also know that 23% of all SNAP recipients have a Latino head of
household and that 18% of Latino households with children were likelier to
experience food insecurity compared to the national average. A further 11%
of Latinos live under the national poverty line.
This is unacceptable to us. With the cost of living continuing to
skyrocket, these expanded benefits provided an essential lifeline to
Latino families and communities during the pandemic. Ending these benefits
will have a real and sustained impact on communities for years to come.
