The air we breathe sets the standard for our health and wellness. However, dangerous types of air pollution — like soot — puts that in jeopardy. That’s why we need the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take every step to protect the health of our families and communities.
The EPA is updating rules to address soot pollution. But their current proposal doesn’t go far enough. That’s why we need your help to show support for even stronger protections against health harming air pollution. Soot, officially known as particle pollution, is a dangerous and sometimes deadly pollutant produced by power plants, vehicle tailpipes and industrial sources. This form of pollution is exceptionally lethal because it’s made up of tiny particles that can evade the body’s defenses and burrow deep into the lungs.
As a result, soot exposure causes thousands of deaths each year and has been linked to a variety of devastating heart and lung diseases. Specifically, reduced lung development in children, higher rates of asthma, bronchitis, heart disease, cancer and early death.
For years, environmental groups, including EDF, have maintained that the current standards are outdated and do not adequately protect public health. And now we have the opportunity to change that!
