Earth Day began in 1970 as a way for citizens to focus and mobilize for environmental change. The City of Fort Worth and partners are hosting a variety of events this year leading up to Earth Day on April 22. Join us and learn how simple actions can help our planet!

4/13: Movies that Matter -?Watch the April? Screening of "Wasted! the Story of Food Waste" at the Modern Art Museum from 7 - 9:30 p.m.

4/15: Build your own raised beds?class?at the Botanic Garden, from 9 - 11 a.m. - Learn how to reduce transportation emissions from your food.

Residents and City staff clean up litter in the Como neighborhood
Code Compliance Staff hosted their March special event litter cleanup in the Como?area On Saturday, March 11.?A total of 51 City staff and volunteers?spent the morning cleaning up Lake Como Park and?neighborhood streets.?
We are excited to report that?a total of 19,700 pounds of litter were removed!?A special thanks to everyone who came out to clean this historic neighborhood!?Working together makes a significant difference in our efforts to keep Fort Worth clean and safe.

April showers mean sprinkler spruce-ups!
Irrigation?is meant to supplement natural?rainfall?- not replace it! With Earth Day?on the horizon, this is a great time to check your sprinklers and to make sure your system and its components are water-wise options.?
- Consider a low-cost moisture meter in your flowerbeds to check if the roots of your plants are actually thirsty.
- Retrofit a few sprinkler heads at a time with low-flow rotary sprinkler heads. Larger droplets means less water wasted through evaporation!
- Consider upgrading to a WaterSense labeled irrigation controller to reduce overwatering.
- Report irrigation violations anonymously through the MyFW app.

Successful recycling at Cowtown Marathon
Each year, the Cowtown Marathon strives to be as close to zero waste as possible in order to qualify for an Evergreen certification from the Council for Responsible Sports. An Evergreen certification is awarded to events that achieve 90% or more of the best practices promoted in the standards for responsible sports.?
The Cowtown Marathon recycles multiple items at their expo and race to divert as many materials away from the landfill as possible. This year, the Marathon used the City?s event recycling trailers to recycle 3,400 pounds of traditional materials such as cardboard, aluminum, glass and paper. In addition, visitors were provided the option to recycle their shoes, clothes, and old cell phones. Finally, 800 pounds of food waste were diverted from the landfill through composting!?

 Composting Corner
As spring approaches and we get ready to plant vegetables, let?s take action to dispose of those food scraps too. Sign up for our Residential Food Waste Composting Program today! From table scraps to moldy bread or produce, coffee grounds and filters, or event bones from cooked meats, we accept it all.
To date, over 446,000 pounds of food waste have been collected, with a low contamination rate of only 1.2%! The city has 17 food scraps collection sites, and there is bound to be one near you too! Visit our website to find where they are.
