[ [link removed] ]Elissa Slotkin for Congress
Friend,
Unfortunately, Elissa has the distinction of being the only member of the House to have had two school shootings in her district.
After the recent tragedy at MSU, the sad truth is that she and her team knew exactly how the federal government could help in the wake of a shooting – because they had already been through this 15 months earlier with the tragedy at Oxford High School.
But beyond that, it also means Elissa has experienced the shifting sands of public opinion in Michigan — a state where many grow up with guns — firsthand. In her district, after two school shootings, she has heard from all kinds of people, including a ton of gun owners and Second Amendment supporters, that they think we should be able to do something to protect our kids. Among real people – that’s not a controversial stance.
Elissa recently talked to The Detroit News about how this has impacted her thinking – how she approaches politics not with the conventional wisdom that this is a polarizing, lightning rod issue, but instead with the no-brainer belief that most people just want to keep our kids safe. She thinks about this issue a bit differently than most Democrats, because she grew up with guns and carried a Glock and M-4 on her three tours in Iraq. If you’d like to hear more about her approach — and how she thinks that Washington politicians are the last ones to absorb the change taking place on the ground — you can take a closer look at the article by clicking here: [link removed]
The polarization around gun safety is part and parcel of the broken culture of politics that Elissa is running to change. Washington needs a new generation of leaders that think differently and act on this issue. We know that outside groups and special interests supportive of the gun lobby will spend big against Elissa in her campaign for Senate so we need to have her back as she fights for our safety.
For this reason and many others, please consider making a donation to Elissa’s campaign for Senate. Your support today will send a message to the special interests that there is deep support for Elissa and the work she is doing to make our communities safer.
